What is hair transplantation?
The hair transplantation more precisely transfer of bristle
roots, is the extraction of the bristle with its roots
from the membrane where it was situated in the body and
its placement into another part of the body.
The hair transplantation is a type of organ transplantation.
The membrane of the person is transferred into another
part of his / her body (auto -transplantation). Recently
other transplantations such as eyebrows, lashes, beard,
mustaches and bristles of the arm (in order to hide razor
traces) are also realized, therefore the designation “hair
transplantation” becomes insufficient. Thus, “TRANSPLANTATION
OF BRISTLE ROOT” is the correct designation. Since lack
of hairs or bristles is not a life threatening disease,
the transplantation is made from the person’s own body
only. A bristle root transfer may be realized from another
person, but due to the negative side effects of the medication
used in order to avoid rejection after transplantation,
the auto-transplantation is just preferred. The probability
of acceptance or rejection of a bristle root is similar
to that of organ transplantation such as kidney, heart
or liver.
Since you bought and read this
book you are interested with the subject and you are on
the eve of a decision on hair transplantation. Before taking
such an important decision as hair transplantation, I recommend
you to read carefully the following chapter. I believe
that if you find some different information than what you
read or heard before, you can take more accurate decisions.
The hair transplantation or in proper designation the
transplantation of the bristle root:
In this part we will disclose in details the methods,
which are no more used, obsolete methods, inadequate but
still applied methods, the best method of nowadays and
future developments.
There are two hair transplantation
methods applied in Turkey: The strip method (FUT), which
is the latest of the old methods and the newer FUE method

Hair Plantation in 10 Question-Answers
Surgeon Dr. Tuğrul Turan and Surgeon
Dr. Ergin Er from Esthetic, Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgery Department of the Memorial Hospital answer for
you the most frequently asked 10 questions on hair transplantation.
The people complaining about hair shedding prefer the
hair transplantation method as the most effective solution.
If you think about applying this method, we recommend you
first to read opinion from the specialists.
Who is eligible for hair transplantation?
The hair transplantation may be
applied to all of the patients, who suffer from masculine
type hair shedding. The masculine type hair shedding
develops with the effect of male hormones in persons
genetically inclined. The hair producer cells around
the hair follicle dye with the time due to the effect
of this hormone. The hairs start to thin, then they do
not grow and finally they are completely fallen. In patients
with this condition the hair transplantation is the most
accurate and lasting therapy.
Is there any age limitation for the hair transplantation?
The type of the shedding rather
than age is more decisive for the operation. If the scalp
is visible by naked eye, it means that the hair concentration
in that area felt below 50% of the normal hair concentration.
Under such condition the hair transplantation may be
the most effective therapy to be applied to the patient.
What is the importance of age factor in this therapy?
The most important factor which
makes the age decisive in the hair transplantation process,
is the termination or not of the hair shedding. The masculine
type hair shedding is a life-long phenomenon but the
rate of shedding decreases after 39 or 40 years. Therefore,
if transplantation is made with younger patients, the
hair shedding may continue and the patient may need second
or third séances later.
How does hair transplantation long?
The hair transplantation takes
3 to 5 hours. If the patient wants to hide the process
from his work or social environment then he would need
nearly 15 days after the operation. If he does not worry
about the secrecy, he may return to his normal life within
2 days.
When the patient shall regain his hairs?
After the process there shall be
reddish rind formation in the plantation area. The patient
will prevent the rind formation by washing his hairs
once a day. After 7 to 10 days, the rinds fall totally
and the plantation area is recovered. Together with
the rind, the transplanted hairs shall fall also. Thus,
within 15 or 1 month the patient will regain his appearance
before the transplantation. He will not see any changes
in the following 3 months. The new hairs start to grow
slowly after 3 months. The most significant change occurs
in the 5th or 6th month. Then, each month there will
be an increase of 10% and 90% of the hairs transplanted
appear 9 months after the transplantation. Then the remaining
10 % appear up to one year. The result of the transplantation
shall be obtained within one year.
Does the hair transplantation present any disadvantage
for human health?
This process is made entirely under
local anesthesia; it is without risk. No side effects known
to affect health have appeared up to now.
Is hair transplantation applicable several times?
The hair transplantation may necessitate
more than one séance depending on the area to be transplanted
and continuation or not of the hair shedding of the patient.
Is the appearance of the new hairs controllable?
The result of the transplantation
depends totally to the technique. The size and direction
of the grafts made during the transplantation will be
decisive on the result. If the grafts are placed in
suitable size and direction with the natural growth of
the hair named follicular unit, the hair transplantation
will have an extremely natural result.
What are the new techniques used in hair transplantation?
The newest technique is FUE (follicular
unit extraction). In this technique the hairs are extracted
one by one from the donor area with metal pipes of 1
mm prepared for this purpose. In this process there
is no cut or seam in the hairy skin. The recovery is
very quick.
Is there any other alternatives, which will supersede
in the future hair transplantation and procure more natural
look to the patient?
Nowadays, hair transplantation
is the most efficient therapy in the masculine type hair
shedding. The studies are still continued on hair cloning
however there is not any result obtained yet. If this is
achieved a few hair follicles extracted from the hairy
scale, would be reproduced in laboratory environment and
planted in the hairless area without restriction.
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Technic
In the FUE method the bristles are extracted one by one
with very thin special devices instead of blocks of thousands
and planted.
The FUE method progressively spread
worldwide in particular during the last years and it is
also applied by our clinic. It is a method done with micro
surgery inervention, it is also known as a seamless system.
In the FUE method the bristles are extracted one by one
with very thin special devices instead of blocks of thousands
and planted. Its most important advantage is that those,
who do not have sufficient bristles in the nuke, may have
the bristles in the other regions of their body such as
breast, arm transferred for plantation. It is possible
to take 1500 to 2000 hair roots in a seance.
- During hair transplantation,
local anesthesia under the skin
of the donor area is applied.
In other words the region, where
the membrane is taken, shall
be deaden.

-
The hair membranes to be used
in hair transplantation are extracted
with special devices or special
needle ends, one by one in an
amount as desired.
-
The region, where hair plantation shall be made, is
outlined with a special pencil. Little channels, in
which the hair roots shall be placed, are opened with
special devices in the number of hair roots.
